Last Order Means Earlier Than Closing Time
A restaurant sign says it closes at 10 p.m. You arrive at 9:25, ready to eat, and learn that the kitchen has already stopped taking orders.
The closing time was correct. The detail you missed was last order.
Last order is the final ordering time
Many restaurants stop accepting new food orders before the venue closes. This gives the kitchen time to finish cooking and allows guests to complete their meals before staff clean and close the space.
You may see L.O. beside the business hours. Food and drinks can have different last-order times, especially at izakaya and bars.
For example, a venue might close at 10 p.m., take final food orders at 9 p.m. and final drink orders at 9:30. Those times vary widely, so treat them only as an illustration.
Entry may stop even earlier
A restaurant can stop seating new guests when it is full, when ingredients run out or when there is not enough time left for the normal meal. Small ramen and specialty shops sometimes close as soon as the day’s stock is sold.
An online listing may show the official closing time without clearly displaying last order. Check the restaurant’s own sign, website or reservation information when arriving late.
Staff may announce the final round
At an izakaya, a staff member may visit the table or a tablet may display a notice. They are asking whether you would like anything else before ordering closes.
This is the right moment to request final drinks, dessert or another dish. It does not mean you must leave immediately; it means the ordering window is ending.

Do not plan around the final minute
For a relaxed dinner, arrive at least an hour before the listed closing time unless the restaurant states otherwise. Allow more time for course meals, popular venues and groups.
The simple version
Closing time tells you when the restaurant finishes operating. Last order tells you when it stops accepting orders—and that can be considerably earlier.
Check both, particularly for a late dinner. Tokyo is full of wonderful meals, but the kitchen still needs time to end its day.
